Tiling
With Mexican Wall Tiles |
The
tiles are hand made. The difference in clay and
length of time in the oven will produce variations
in colour and size between batches of Mexican tiles.
There are also smaller variation within a batch.
Because it is hand made each tile is unique. Mexican
tiles are convex or concave, because of this light
hits each tile differently creating a pillow-like
effect.
-
Prepare
the surface that you are going to tile.
We often tile on to tile backer board.
-
Apply a
layer of adhesive in the area that you are going
to tile.Use a moisture resistant adhesive- Mapei Bal or Ardex (but there are many other brands too)
-
Back
butter the centre of the tile (place a
dab of adhesive on the back, in the middle
of the tile). This will support the tile
and prevent it from cracking.
-
Use
your eye to place the tile on the wall.
Use spacers in the centre of tiles to
support them as the adhesive dries. See
the photograph. We often use the cardboard
from the box. Use a level to make sure
that the tiling is progressing in a straight
line.
-
Use wide
joint grout. Use smooth strokes all in the
same direction. We recommend Ardex FLex FL wide joint grout. It come in a variety of different including white, limestone, sandstone,
grey and black. To find stockist near you use this link www.ardex.co.uk.
-
Wait
twenty minutes for the grout to set up.
A haze will begin to develop.
-
Use
clean water and a sponge carefully wipe
away excess grout.
-
Allow
twenty four hours to dry.
-
The
Mexican
tiles have an inherent crackle in
the glaze. Over time the effect becomes
more pronounced.
